Oct 6th: Birds?

I woke up at 4:30 am and couldn’t fall back to sleep, so I got up and hung out on the patio. As the sun came up, the birds started singing. The sounds were amazing. I will have to try and record it one morning.

The house is amazing and really comfortable and open. It has these wonderful folding doors that allows you to completely open up the house. The view out over the ocean is fantastic and the pool is really gorgeous.

How could you get tired of this?

The one really bizarre and puzzling feature of the house is the big metal pole in the middle of the living area. We have speculated and speculated and speculated and speculated. The only rational conclusion that we can come up with is that it is a stripper pole.

We lounged around enjoying the morning and having coffee and just generally relaxing. We decided we would drive up to Mossman Gorge and check out the jungle and I could hopefully get some nice bird pics with my new camera lens.

It was a scenic drive along the coast with many fantastic looking beaches.

We got to Mossman Gorge, bought our tickets and piled into the shuttle van. It was pretty crowded with people, but not overwhelming. We strolled along the hiking track checking out the jungle. I had my big lens on hoping to get some pictures of birds. There was a stunning lack of bird life. Eventually I got tired of carrying it so switched to my wide angle.

I find capturing photographs of the jungle to be exceedingly hard. The lighting is terrible and no matter how hard I try, I just can’t quite seem to capture the feel of the place. Sometimes I like to think of a theme that I am going to try and capture, so today I tried to focus on the concept of texture to see if that would help me maybe capture the jungle better. I guess you can be the judge.

It was pretty hot and humid and we were happy to get back to the car and get the AC going. We drove back down to the house, ate some lunch and got into the pool and floated around and relaxed. It was a very nice day.

Just hanging around the house is vacation in and of itself. We put some shrimp on the barbie, drank some wine and just enjoyed the very pleasant environment.

Tomorrow we do the skytram and train which is supposed to be pretty cool.
